According to WMTW News 8, a standoff happened in downtown Hallowell over the weekend after a welfare check was initiated.

Police were called to do a welfare check at a downtown apartment at about 7:00 Saturday evening. Upon arrival, it became clear to officers that the subject was in need of professional mental healthcare and was in crisis. It wasn't clear whether the subject was armed.

The Hallowell Police Department called for the assistance of the Maine State Police crisis negotiation and tactical teams. During the incident police also shut down access to Water Street and had several restaurant employees and patrons 'shelter in place' for multiple hours Saturday night.

The standoff was resolved early Sunday morning with no injuries reported. Officials say the subject in question is now receiving the necessary mental healthcare.
