According to the Kennebec Journal, in conjunction with The Maine Gun Safety Coalition, the Waterville Maine Police Department will be hosting a 'gun giveback day' at the police department next Saturday, June 11th.

The KJ reports that the gin giveback will include both unwanted firearms and ammunition and take place at the Waterville Police Department on 6.11.22 from 10 am to 2 pm.

For people looking to give up unwanted firearms and/or ammunition, the department will be accepting pellet guns, handguns, rifles and shotguns and even air rifles.

The Kennebec Journal says that for people who are attending the event to remain in their vehicle after parking and that an officer will come to you to retrieve any of the unwanted items that you've brought with you.

The KJ says that the Maine Gun Safety Coalition has been hosting this event for several years now, though this will be the first year that the Waterville Police Department will be participating in the effort.

Waterville Police Chief, Joe Massey, told the Kennebec Journal,

“We will have free gun locks available and gun safety pamphlets that provide tips on how to safely store your guns and ammo at home,” Massey said in an email. “This program is similar to the Drug Take Back program we hold every year that allows folks to safely dispose of unused prescription medication.”

According to WGME 13, at least nine other police departments, in addition to Waterville, will be participating in the event.
