A possible disaster was averted on Friday night thanks to a quick-thinking Maine police officer.

WGME News 13 is reporting that somebody lit off a firework on the Beach in Old Orchard on Friday night. That firework then sparked a subsequent grass fire on a nearby dune.

Reports say that the fire was moving in the direction of the Surf 6 restaurant on Old Orchard Beach.

A nearby police officer was able to get on scene less than 60 seconds after the initial firework went off. The officer was then able to put the fire out.

WGME goes on to report that consumer fireworks are illegal to use in Old Orchard Beach and violators can receive fines of up to $500.
