UPDATE

We are being told the schools were in a state of being "locked in".  In a "lock down" the doors to classes are locked and the staff and students hide in the dark.  In a "lock in" the doors to classes are locked, but class continues as normal.

If you have a child in the Augusta School System, there is a good chance that you received a robocall from the Superintendent of School James Anastasio early this afternoon.

In the call, he explains that all of the city's schools were locked down for about thirty minutes earlier today.  His recorded message went on to say the reason for the lockdown was a "social media threat".

While he never confirmed this, the "social media threat" was most likely the threats of violence that have gone viral on TikTok over the last few days.  These posts claimed there would be acts of violence committed against schools nationwide on December 17th, 2021.

The school system administrators had previously posted about the online threat.

A post from the Augusta Schools website says:

TikTok has a video and some anonymous posts about school threats and shootings around the country today (Dec.17th).  Some of our students have been talking about the Tik Tok posts and some parents have called in to express their concerns.  The threats have been deemed not credible at this time.   School safety is our top priority, so our School Resources Officers and other officers will have a prominent presence at our schools.  Contact your school if you have additional questions.

Fortunately, it seems like there were no incidents and that the lockdowns were just a precaution.

A Look Inside The Old Cony High School

From 1930 to 2006, the Old Cony High School provided a high school education to the teenagers of Augusta, Maine. Now, it serves as senior housing. Thanks to a resident of the building, we can take a look at it.
