Its americas oldest recreational water trail founded in 1988.
The Maine Trail Island is a water trail that covers more than 375 miles with the top ranging from Canada all the way to the New Hampshire border. It’s all about exploring and enjoying the many islands that dot the coastline of Maine. More than 200 islands make up the Maine Island Trail. Along the trail there are easy treks, and some that require a bit more skill on the water to get to them, as well as explore them. With the addition of a great phone app the Maine Island Trail can track you, guide you, and help you find some truly uniques gems along the way. The scenery along the way is second to none. Covid-19 has effected some of the island sites however the trails remain open The Trail Remains Open. There is also a list of updates at the Maine Island Trail Website. According to MITA.org
"Most Trail sites are open for day use or camping as usual, however some sites have been closed or modified at the request of the owners. Additionally, there may be COVID-related impacts to the launch ramps, marinas and commercial campgrounds listed in the 2020 Trail Guide and Mobile App."
