According to the article in the KJ, the giant mural of the Indian spearfishing in the gymnasium at Skowhegan High School has been painted over. What was once the iconic image of the Skowhegan High sports team has now been reduced to just white bricks. Thee board has also removed the sign that read 'Home of the Indians'. School officials also said that the district has not yet chosen a replacement mascot.

The debate over whether or not to remove the mascot got very heated and caused lots of outrage from town residents and students who were both for and against the proposed changes.

After it was determined that the mascot should be removed, it led to the passing of a state law banning ALL Native American mascots from Maine schools.

The state Legislature voted to ban Native American mascotsfrom its public schools and universities in April, becoming the first state in the country to do so. During hearings on the topic, several members of the state’s Native American populations explained that the use of such symbols did not honor them, but rather promoted a legacy of racism.
