Road Trip – The Rockland Breakwater

Unfortunately, as we continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, many of our beloved Maine attractions are not opening this year.  Or, if they are, they'll not be open until later in the season.

As a result, many families are desperately seeking activities that will get them out of the house.

If your family falls into this category, the Rockland Breakwater could be just what you're looking for!

Located just below the Samoset Resort, the breakwater, juts nearly one mile (4,364 feet) out from Jameson Point.

According to Wikipedia, in the early and mid-1800s, Rockland became a go-to port in the storm for vessels traveling through the area.  However, as it was largely open to the ocean, it was not the most-protected harbor.  Discussions about how to better protect the harbor began in the 1850s, but the project was not approved until 1880.  Between 1880 and 1900, using 700,000 tons of granite, the US Army Corps of Engineers built the breakwater.  The lighthouse was added in 1902.
