It’s Still Illegal To Enter A Person’s Vehicle To Save A Pet

It appears that a bill making it legal for a person to enter another's vehicle to save an animal is dead.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the bill proposed a change in the law that would allow someone acting in good faith, to enter a vehicle in order to save a pet without facing criminal or civil repercussions.

Currently, if you break a car window to save an animal you could be charged with vandalism and/or be sued over property damage.

The bill was voted down by the Maine Legislature last year, and according to the Maine senior state director for the Humane Society of the United States, it is not up for consideration this year.

Even though the bill did not pass, it did initiate a dialog about the issue.  For example, Maine animal control officers are now be trained to respond to situations where animals are in danger because they are not able to escape a vehicle.
