Jay Coelho has been the Waterville Mayor for just over half a year, but has announced he is considering resigning from the city role after disclosing some serious health concerns this week.

According to CentralMaine.Com, Coelho stated in a Monday email that he had recently been flown to the hospital via a Lifeflight helicopter for health concerns regarding his heart. Following the flight, Coelho spent a week in the intensive care unit before returning home.

During the hospital stay doctors extracted multiple blood clots from Coelho's arteries. Jay said in the email that he "should have died Monday night". The surgery alone was more than four hours long. Coelho went on to say that his prognosis 'isn't good' and that part of his heart isn't moving, 'it's just dead muscle'.

“I have young children, whose lives will be affected, I have people who depend on me in order to pay their bills. I have not made a decision yet, however I am leaning towards resigning and the city should be given ample opportunity to know what may come down the line" Coelho wrote in part.
