UPDATE @ 2 PM on April 4th...

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, the explosion happened at a nearby gas station at approximately 10:45 AM on Monday,

The release says, in part:

On Monday, April; 4, 2022 around 10:45 a.m. the Richmond fire Department responded to an underground fuel tank explosion at the Quick Stop near exit 43 in Richmond. It was determined that a passenger car had just driven over the underground fuel tank when the explosion occurred. Investigators with the Fire Marshal’s office were called to the scene. Representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection and Service Technicians were also on scene.

If you travel through, or around, Richmond, you are going to want to take note of this - an underground explosion has caused a road closure.

According to WMTW, officials are saying the roads between I-295 at the Richmond Exit (Exit 43) and White Road on Main Street was shut down. Since the explosion initially occurred, one lane of traffic has reopened on the road.

At this point, the cause of the reported explosion has not been announced.  There have, reportedly, been no reports of smoke or fire near the explosion.

First responders and officials continue to investigate the situation.
