Maine starts the day with 5,881 active cases of COVID-19. 10,614 of the 16,760 cases recovered according to WABI. There have been 265 deaths.  The bulk of the active cases are in the southern part of Maine.

Maine hospitals saw an increase in COVID-19 patients in the first week of December in that post-Thanksgiving window according to WABI. Numbers were up around the state.

MaineGeneral in Augusta received a shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine yesterday according to centralmaine.com.  The plan is to provide the first doses to first-line healthcare workers.

Waterville took care of a lot of business last night including reducing the lot size needed to keep in-town chickens according to centralmaine.com. The size was reduced from 10,000 square feet to 8,000.

Saddleback Mountain in Sandy River Plantation will be open for the first time in years according to centralmaine.com.  Upgrades at the mountain include a new faster chairlift.

A small earthquake last week in eastern Maine is being spun into internet conspiracy theory according to centralmaine.com.  The ‘theory’ is that the quake was a bomb blast that killed thousands of Chinese troops in the United States.

A Portland man robbed a McDonalds with a running chainsaw in his hand according to WGME.  After going behind the counter, revving the chainsaw, he left with food and money.

Tomorrow (12/17) is Red Kettle Blitz Day in New England according to WABI. It is a one day challenge to increase the Salvation Army Red Kettle Donations, which are down almost half of last year’s donations. Donations are used to fund Salvation Army programs year-round.
