This Big Augusta Maine Solar Farm is About to Triple in Size

Unless you're a Central Mainer who lives under a rock, which is totally fine & we're not judging if you do, then you're already familiar with the massive 34-acre solar farm that sits across the street from Twins' Market near Route 3 and the Churchill Road in Augusta. Well, that farm is about to get bigger- a lot bigger.

According to the Kennebec Journal, final approval has now been given by the city of Augusta's planning board to begin construction on the new 87-acre solar farm. The new solar farm will be constructed right next to the current 34-acre farm at the same location. The project is called BD Solar Church Hill.

Previously, the planning board had put a 180 day moratorium on any such projects as they discussed and implemented new rules for solar farms in Augusta. After reaching a consensus and enacting new rules, most of which are designed to shield visibility of the solar farms to the public, the moratorium was lifted.

This new farm is expected to generate 20 megawatts of electricity and will have about 50,000 individual panels. There will also be an agriculture-style 7 foot fence that surrounds the farm once it's completed.
