Looks like we're going to get to drive a little faster. Speed limits on most of I-295 and long sections of I-95 are going up. According to Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt, the changes will go into effect as soon as new signs are ready this week. Some speeds on sections have already been increased.

Most of the higher speed limits will be incremental, from 55 mph to 60 mph and 65 mph to 70 mph. The Maine Turnpike Authority will be raising limits to 70 mph for much of the toll highway. Also, a section of U.S. Route 1 between Brunswick and Bath will be increased, from 55 mph to 60 mph. The stretch of I-95 north of Old Town will remain at 75 mph.
