State Police say a Sabattus man was killed this morning when his SUV struck a tree off Route 197 in Litchfield.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, Michael Oliver, 67, was killed instantly.

Trooper Erin James said Oliver was traveling east when his Chevrolet Blazer crossed the center line and slammed head-on into a pine tree just off the opposite lane.

McCausland said the crash took place near Gowell’s Shop n’ Save. Oliver was alone in the vehicle and was not wearing his seatbelt, McCausland said.  James said it did not appear that road conditions played a role in the crash, which took place just after 6:30 a.m.
