Majority of Mainers Will Receive $600 Stimulus Payments
This is something that congress has been working on for months. Literally, months. No matter the side of the aisle you're on, it becomes incredibly frustrating to watch our elected officials continue to play politics while millions of Americans are in need of relief from the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yesterday afternoon it finally happened. Both sides, each making a handful of sacrifices, were able to come together and agree on a second round of COVID-19 relief for Americans. The bill is similar to the last one, though the direct payments won't be quite as much. Americans making up to $75,000 or couples making up to $150,000 will receive $600 each. There will also be an additional $600 per child.
Additionally this new bill temporarily establishes a $300 per week jobless benefit to supplement what unemployed Americans may already be receiving. According to News Center Maine, the new bill also includes money for struggling businesses, schools and renters that are facing eviction.
Though it has been agreed upon it still hasn't yet been 'passed', though that is expected to happen later today (Monday, December 21st). The vote will happen first in the House and then move to the Senate for final approval. The $900 billion stimulus package is only part of the $1.4 trillion government spending bill that would be passed when this measure is voted on later today.
