MaineCare Now Covers Transition & Gender Affirming Care
According to the Kennebec Journal, MaineCare has begun providing coverage for transgendered Mainer's medically necessary care.
The policy change, approved through the rule-making process in June by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, became effective Sept. 16, according to a news release Wednesday by EqualityMaine and the Maine Transgender Network.
The groups indicate that the new MaineCare policy gets rid of an old and discriminatory exclusion that affected gender transition care. With this new policy in place, medical providers will now be reimbursed for providing MaineCare covered services to treat patients with gender dysphoria which is described as a clinical distress caused by a conflict between a person’s gender identity and the sex assigned to that person at birth.
According to the KJ, there are 22 other states, now including Maine, that provide coverage for transition and gender affirming care through medicaid.
