Last week, we told you that the FBI had paid a visit to a Front Street, Waterville building on Friday morning.  We now have more details about that investigation.

According to the KJ, during the search of a Waterville apartment, agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations found and seized what they described as being "handmade explosive devices".

Additionally, 18 year old Xavier Pelkey was taken into custody as a result of the investigation.  He was reportedly taken into custody without incident.  He is reportedly facing a federal charge of possessing unregistered destructive devices.

Pelkey reportedly told the agents who raided his 80 Front Street apartment that he had strapped several types of fireworks together in order to make a bigger boom.  However, FBI bomb technicians who examined the device found that device had staples, pins, and tacks inside.  The FBI agents believe those metal objects were meant to act as shrapnel.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the seized devices  met the definition of “destructive devices” under federal law.  And, it appeared the devices could be used as weapons.

No reason was given as to why Pelkey allegedly constructed the devices.

Pelkey is due to have an initial hearing at U S District Court in Portland on Wednesday.  He is reportedly being held at the Somerset County Jail.
