A small plane, believed to be a Cessna, has gone down on I-295 near Bowdoinham.

UPDATE: 12:10PM

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said the pilot  and his passenger both had minor injuries.  According to McCausland, the pilot,  John Gayley of Bowdoin, had facial injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center. His passenger  - Rodney Voisene  of Bowdoin–had a minor arm injury and was taken to a local hospital to be checked..  Gayley told troopers he had taken off from the Bowdoinham airfield  and the engine stalled when he attempted to switch fuel tanks . Gayley had planned to fly to the airfield in Turner.

McCausland said Gayley landed the 1947 Cessna in the southbound lane, against traffic and the plane then veered into the guardrail, along the breakdown lane.  One vehicle had to swerve to avoid the plane as it landed.

According to McCausland, the FAA has been notified and is due on scene shortly.  A wrecker will remove the plane from the road this afternoon and southbound traffic will be disrupted during that time.
