Armed guards outside around Kennebec County in Augusta got attention yesterday. According to centralmaine.com it was planned evacuation. The annual drill was doen meet state Department of Corrections regulations.

Maine Police are looking for information on who may have thrown rocks from the Dinsmore Road overpass in Sidney I95North. According to WABI it happened on Aug 16 and 23. No one has been seriously injured yet.  Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 207-624-7076.

A boat crashed on shore behind the Village Inn Restaurant in Belgrade. According to WMTW the boat owner has jumped off to tie  it and left the boat in reverse. Then as a passenger went to turn it off they accidentally pushed the throttle forward. The boat then accelerate and jumped up on shore and hit some diners. There were some minor injuries.

The 2.2 magnitude earthquake was reported yesterday just off  offshore in Cape Elizabeth. According to WMTW earthquakes below a 3.0 magnitude are considered low intensity and are felt "by very few under especially favorable conditions."

The Powerball winning ticket may have been bought in Massachusetts but Maine had a $1M winning ticket sold at Steamboat Galley in Searsport and a $50,000 winner at Shaw's in Freeport. According to WABI Maine had 34,559 winning tickets worth a total of $1,422,489.

There is an effort for a new lobster emoji.  Luke's Lobster restaurant has started an online petition for the 'digital crustacean'. According to WABI the emoji is under consideration for release in 2018 by the Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit governing body responsible for determining which emojis get added each year.

Sears officials announced the list of 28 K-Mart stores they are closing. None is in Maine. The Sun Journal reports company officials announced the list of 28 stores slated for closure and none are in Maine.

The event is being held Friday evening Vinegar Hill Music Theatre in Arundel. Speakers include two Seeds of Peace campers and the executive director Leslie Lewin. The camp was founded by the late foreign correspondent John Wallach, who brought a group of Israeli and Arab teens in Maine in 1993 with a goal of finding common ground.

A Maine judge has found a motorist guilty of failing to yield to a middle school student killed in a crosswalk last November. The Sun Journal reports that 55-year-old Laurie Young surrendered her license Thursday in at the conclusion of an emotionally charged proceeding. She also apologized to the mother of 13-year-old Jayden Cho-Sargent, who was killed while walking to Lewiston Middle school.

Some critics of federal land ownership hope President Donald Trump will overrule his Interior secretary's recommendation and rescind recently created national monuments. Anne Mitchell of the Maine Woods Coalition said Thursday that the federal government already owns enough land without the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and others. She says federal ownership will hurt Maine's forest products industry.

The federal government is launching an investigation into the recent deaths of endangered North Atlantic right whales. At least 13 of the whales have been found dead this year off the coasts of New England and Canada. They are among the rarest marine mammals in the world and number no more than 500.

Texas residents and officials are preparing for Hurricane Harvey, which the National Hurricane Center says has strengthened to a Category 2 storm. Harvey grew quickly Thursday from a tropical depression into a Category 1 hurricane. Early Friday, the center reported it's now at a Category 2. Fueled by warm Gulf of Mexico waters, the storm is projected to become a major Category 3 hurricane.

The ingredients to make a monster storm are coming together for Hurricane Harvey. Warm water. There's plenty of that over the Gulf of Mexico. The air 40,000 feet high needs to be calm. It is. The storm needs to move slowly. Harvey is likely to lumber along. And Harvey may follow the ideal path to keep strong longer.

Thailand's military ruler says authorities are searching for former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, whose whereabouts are unknown after she failed to show up for a contentious trial verdict and a Supreme Court judge said a warrant would be issued for her arrest. Yingluck is facing a 10-year prison term for alleged negligence in overseeing an ill-fated rice subsidy program that cost the state billions of dollars.

A South Korean court has found billionaire Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong guilty of bribery, embezzlement, hiding assets overseas, concealing profit from criminal acts and perjury. The court is reading out verdicts for several accused before announcing sentences.

The Republican-led Congress is heading into perilous waters as it faces a debt limit deadline and criticism from President Donald Trump. If lawmakers don't increase the nation's $19.9 trillion borrowing limit by late September, the government could be unable to pay its bills. That could roil the financial markets and lead to other harsh consequences. Trump says Republican lawmakers could have made it easy but now face what he calls "a mess."
