According to the Kennebec Journal, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has issued a DO NOT EAT order for deer that have been harvested in the Fairfield, Maine area.

The order was issued due to an ongoing investigation into wells in the area that may be contaminated with PFAS, otherwise known as 'forever chemicals'. Hunters who have already harvested deer in the area are asked to dispose of the deer and not to eat any of it.

As part of the ongoing investigation, several already harvested deer have been tested for PFAS, and many have come back positive for high levels of contamination. Because of this, the 'do not eat' order starts at the Ohio Hill Road and extends out a 5-mile radius.

Maine hunters who have already harvested a deer can reach out to Maine IF&W and will be provided an additional deer tag for the 2022 Maine deer hunting season.
