The Maine State Police said the man shot and killed by a State Trooper early Monday morning (May 14) in an armed confrontation in Wales is William N. Derick, 54, who lived in a mobile home at 485 Pond Road, also known as Route 132.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland, the trooper involved was James MacDonald, a member of the State Police Tactical Team.

McCausland said as is standard in the aftermath of officer involved shootings, MacDonald, a seven year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the incident is reviewed by the department.  The Attorney General’s Office is the investigating agency for all officer involved shootings in Maine.  Derick’s body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy, according to McCausland.
