Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Gets the Animated Movie Treatment
Fans of Mariah Carey’s inconceivably popular holiday tune “All I Want for Christmas Is You” were shocked when they found out, in 2015, that the song wasn’t about a man or a piece of chocolate cake, but a dog! In Carey’s children’s book of the same name, she tells a story of a little girl who, more than anything, wants a puppy for Christmas. Now, Universal has optioned the movie rights, and is turning the story into an animated movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carey’s earworm and the book it’s based on will hit theaters in CGI movie form around November of this year. The voice cast includes Henry Winkler, Lacey Chabert, Phil Morris, Laya Hayes, Brenna Yde, and Keiko Agena and production is currently underway. Carey took to Twitter this morning to announce the news:
And here’s the plot, per THR:
The film sees [Breanna] Yde voicing a young Mariah who sees a darling puppy named Princess at the pet store and suddenly knows exactly what she wants for Christmas. But she must prove that she can pet-sit Jack, a scraggly rascal of a dog who turns Mariah and her family’s holiday preparations upside down.
Carey’s children’s book has sold over 750,000 copies, her song is the best-selling holiday download of all time, and it has regularly topped the Top 40 charts every year since its release in 1994. It’s so popular, it’s spawned yearly thinkpieces about why people like it so much (something to do with the extremely Christmassy chord progression) and about the same number of parodies – including the best Chatroulette prank of all time. News of a movie kinda comes out of nowhere, but maybe this insidiously catchy song is enough to get the holiday break crowds into the theater.
