A man from Naples, Maine is dead after a Saturday morning crash where he rode his 2002 Ski-Doo Back Country 850 into several trees while snowmobiling, according to WABI TV 5.

Daniel Hammond, 46 of Naples, was riding with friends on Saturday morning near the town of Harrison. While riding, Hammond apparently left the trail and struck trees with his snowmobile. He and his group of friends had just crossed Cape Monday Road in Harrison.

After crossing the road, the group was heading down the trail when Hammond's sled turned off the tail into the trees. Reports indicate that following the accident, Hammond remained conscious for upwards of 20 minutes before he passed away from his injuries.

Hammond had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The Maine Warden Service is continuing to investigate what led to the incident.

Snowmobilers are advised to always use caution, ride safely and wear a helmet when riding on Maine snowmobile trails.
