I am so darn gullible and it's honestly embarrassing. Back in middle school when it was hilarious to point up and say "Look! The word gullible is written on the ceiling" I would look up every single time.

Every single year, we as radio hosts on April Fool's Day get a company wide email asking us to kindly not prank our listeners to commemorate the holiday. I suppose it's understandable, we don't want to diminish the trust we've built with our audience. However, an April Fool's prank is all in good fun and I feel like our listeners would forgive us!

When and Why Did April Fool's Day become a thing?

There are a few theories:

  •  One popular theory goes way back in the day to the 16th century. France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar  and the new calendar moved the start of the year from April 1st to January 1st. People who continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1st were made fun of and called  "April fools." The ones who followed the new calendar would play pranks on the "fools" by tricking them into believing that the new year was still on April 1st.
  •  Another possible connection is the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria which was typically held in late March or early April. People would dress in disguises and played practical jokes on each other. This celebration of laughter and fun could have translated into what we now call April Fools' Day.
  • There’s also a theory that April Fools' Day is linked to the concept of "All Fools' Day," which was a day set aside to prank people in medieval Europe.

If you are not forbidden to pull pranks on April Fool's Day, chances are you have already started prank brainstorming or prankstorming as I like to call it!

A site called BetMassachusetts.com dove into Google Trends data to see what states are looking for April Fools’ Day pranks the most over the past week and sneaky New Hampshire came in at the #5 spot.
