What Does "Handmade Ice Cream" Mean?

Ice cream in general is fantastic, but there's something a little "extra" about getting handmade when you visit a shop.

Handmade ice cream means the mixing, churning, and creating of flavors is done on-site and often in small batches using fresh local ingredients.

That means you'll get creamier textures and bolder flavors, and some added Granite State charm.

We've pulled together 23 must-visit shops that serve up handmade ice cream from VisitNH.gov's list, including places like Richardson's Farm, Super Secret Ice Cream, and Hayward's Family Ice Cream.

Where Is the Oldest Ice Cream Shop in New Hampshire?

One of the New Hampshire spots that serves handmade ice cream and is reportedly the oldest ice cream shop is Kellerhaus in Laconia.

According to its website, Kellerhaus started serving up the sweet treat in the 1920s and offered it year-round. It was even made with ice that was harvested from Lake Winnipesaukee.

If you're brave enough, you might want to try the 10-scoop sundae known as the Colossus. Challenge accepted, right?
