Route 1 in Saugus, Massachusetts Might Be the Dumbest Road in All of New England

There, I've said it.  I am over the LOOP-DEE LOOP of Route 1 in Saugus, Massachusetts.

Recently, my husband and I stayed at a hotel on Route 1.  I was headed to Logan Airport early the next morning and we wanted to make sure we got there early.

Reason #1 Why Route 1 is Dumb

When we were looking around for dinner options, I would have loved to go to the Kowloon, but that was up the road, going the wrong way from our hotel. We didn't want the hassle of getting through all that traffic just to go such a short distance.

In other words, we didn't want to do the LOOP-DEE LOOP

The meal at the other restaurant was fine, it was.  Just fine.  But man, it fried my (Golden) banana that I couldn't (or chose not to) go to the Kowloon just because that road is the dumbest one in all of New England.

Look, I am not dissing the businesses on Route 1.  They are exactly why I'm so frustrated with the actual ROAD.

I found a great article on on the crazy places on the road from 2022 by bostonmagazine.com.  Scott Kearnan wrote a great piece, "When Route 1 Rules the Earth."  He expresses my love for the kitchy feel that Route 1 has better than I ever could.  Kudos, Scott.   He's a fancy writer.  He spells donuts D O U G H N U T S.

Reason #2 Why Route 1 is Dumb

What I'm upset with the most is the LOOP-DEE LOOP that you have to go through in order to get to the other side of the street.

Say, for instance, you wanted to get to the Golden Banana for a Bachelor party, but you are at Hockey Town across the street.

Reason #3 Why Route 1 is Dumb

It should only take you about 5 minutes to get to your saucy destination, but no.  It may take you 30 minutes.  You have to do the LOOP-DEE LOOP to get to the Banana.  #thatswhatshesaid

Okay, enough of my rant.  I wish I had the time and/or the inclination to find out why that road was paved the way it was, but I do not.  Maybe fancy writers can do that for us all.  (*cough cough... scott cough cough*)
