As the winter thaw begins and people start to think summertime in Maine, vacations are planned and fun is dreamt about. Each and every year, there's a handful of towns in the Pine Tree State that people just can't seem to get enough of.

Those towns include Old Orchard Beach, Bar Harbor, Camden and Kennebunkport, just to name a few. The travel experts at AAA have released their list of the 13 Underrated Summer Travel Destinations For 2025 and they've proclaimed that one Maine town is not getting enough attention.

Perhaps it's a bit of surprise to see Ogunquit listed as one of the most underrated summer destinations in America considering how busy the small town gets during the warmest season. But AAA says it's warranted.

They've placed Ogunquit next to other well known hotspots like Sedona, California, Lake Placid, New York, as well as Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Why? Because all of these places have stood the test of time as a welcoming and charming place to visit in the summer.

AAA believes that Ogunquit is the happy medium between a quintessential small town Maine experience and all the amenities people want on vacation. Ogunquit offers world class beaches, boat tours and its historic Marginal Way walking path.

Ogunquit is filled with cool little shops and a bunch of restaurants offering a mix of fresh Maine seafood as well as other diverse offerings. Ogunquit is close enough for a quick drive to Portland or Old Orchard Beach or just tucked away enough to be left alone during a stay.

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
