For several years, there has been a lot of chatter about the need for residents of Maine to get a Real ID. Over the course of those years, several deadlines have been pushed back for a variety of reasons.
It appears that the real deadline for a Real ID has arrived. Starting on May 7, 2025, enforcement of Real IDs will become a thing across the United States. Here's what you need to know.
Maine Residents Are NOT Required to Get a Real ID
The Real ID program was put together to reduce identity fraud and help streamline security, but it is not an actual requirement in Maine or anywhere else. At least, not yet.
If you opt out of acquiring a Real ID, you'll need to start carrying around some extra items if you plan on flying domestically or entering into certain government facilities. On May 7, 2025, you'll be required to show a Real ID or valid passport to board a domestic flight or gain entry to places to military bases.
How Do I Get a Real ID in Maine?
In order to obtain a Real ID, there's a handful of requirements that will need to met. First, you cannot obtain a Real ID through the mail. It's suggested that you make an appointment at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
You'll need to bring a proof of identity (valid drivers license, passport), proof that you're a legal U.S. resident as well as proof that you're a resident of Maine (document that shows your legal address).
Acquiring a Real ID in Maine Comes With an Additional Fee
A typical drivers license renewal costs as little as $7 dollars in Maine. A Real ID is going to cost quite a bit more. The standard cost to acquire a Real ID in Maine is $30. However, from the date you obtain your Real ID, it is good for six full years.
