Officials Warn of Deadly Dog Disease Spreading Through Maine Rapidly
Officials are warning that dog owners need to be on high alert throughout Maine.
A social media post on Sunday evening from the Houlton Maine Police Department went viral warning that multiple dogs in the area had died after being infected with a virus.
It's called Parvo Virus and it's known to be an incredibly contagious disease amongst canines. Even worse, it can quickly put both puppies and older dogs into dangerous health situations. In some cases, it happens faster than owners even realize.
Officials warn that if your dog is exhibiting symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea or extreme lethargy, it's important to seek veterinary care immediately.
Bangor, Maine, Has Reported Cases of Parvo Virus Recently As Well
The parvo virus spread is not limited to Houlton, Maine. Residents of a Bangor, Maine, community page also discussed recent dog illnesses and death that was attributed to Parvo.
Right now, many community members in both cities are suggesting extreme caution when it comes to dog parks, especially for puppies, older dogs as well as any dogs that have compromised immune systems.
There's a Vaccine For Parvo Virus That Can Be Administered By Veterinarians
One of the best ways to protect your dog from Parvo Virus is with a vaccine.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the vaccine has proven to be extremely effective at preventing dogs from acquiring the virus. Your local veterinarian will have all the information on how the vaccine can be delivered and which dogs are best suited for it.
