Maine literally looks like vacationland in the summertime and if you do your exploring right, you can find some seriously cool spots in nature not everybody knows about. Here's mine.

Presumpscot River Preserve Portland

You'll find this popular river-walk on google maps easily but what you won't find easily is the little hidden beach gems along the way. This is my go-to every summer with my pup Maverick because it's nestled far enough in the woods that doggos can run around off leash.

Waterfalls in Maine

Did you know the Presumpscot River actually extends into a waterfall if you walk the trails long enough? It's an absolutely incredible experience when you witness it for the first time.

Actually, if you keep walking along the trails, you'll find man-made swings in the trees that allow you to swing from the rocks back to land.

It may not be the safest way to have fun, but if you're a daredevil, it's there.

Pro tip though if you have water dogs like me, leash them ahead of time once you start hearing the water up ahead. You'll eventually run into this sign and that's your literal sign to leash the pups.

How to get to Presumpscot River Preserve

To get to the magic, you must first find the neighborhood that holds the parking lot behind it (past Amato's and Taco Bell in outer Portland).
