Thank You, K9 Doug: Brave New Hampshire Police Dog on SWAT Retires

Thanks for your service, K9 Doug.

The Manchester, New Hampshire, police canine's last day with the department was Tuesday, June 6, which ended his 7-year run, according to a Facebook post from Manchester Association of Police Canines - K9s.

The post stated that K9 Doug's handler, Officer Jake Tyler, who has served 15 years with the K9 unit, won't be retiring as well but will instead be assigned to a different unit with the Manchester Police Department.

The two were partnered up in 2016 and worked on both patrol and SWAT as well as explosives/ballistics detection, according to the Facebook post.

They even were assigned to work together during the 2023 Boston Marathon, according to another Facebook post from the Manchester Association of Police Canines.

Swim With a Mission posted on its Facebook page that Tyler and the 8-year-old Belgian Malinois are competing in the 7th annual Swim With a Mission at Newfound Lake on July 15. The event supports veterans and, per Swim With a Mission, will be Tyler and K9 Doug's fifth year swimming a 1K.

So it looks like K9 Doug isn't quite ready to rest yet.

The website SitStay.com names the Belgian Malinois as the no. 3 best police dog, but we imagine he's No. 1 in Tyler's heart.

Wonderfully, K9 Doug gets to live with Tyler's family now that he's retired so they get to keep being best buds off of work, too.
