There’s a giant stone fireplace hiding at the top of a hike in Lewiston, Maine, and if you’ve never seen it, consider this your sign to get outside and explore your own backyard.

Thorncrag Sanctuary has been one of those places that feels like a little secret for as long as I can remember.

Sitting pretty right in the middle of Lewiston, it’s a peaceful escape that deserves a whole lot more love.

The hike takes you through beautiful wooded trails, past glorious ponds where frogs put on what sounds like their own little outdoor concert, and eventually to that impressive stone fireplace waiting at the top.

It’s the kind of place where you can slow down. Revolutionary concept, I know.

And that fireplace? It’s not just a cool spot to stop and catch your breath.

As per Thorncraig, It was built in 1932 as a memorial to Kate J. Anthony, whose family helped make Thorncrag what it is today.

The sanctuary now spans 450 acres, with miles of trails, open meadows, wildlife ponds, and views that remind you how beautiful Maine really is.

There’s even a little piece of Thorncrag history hiding in plain sight before you get there: a large stone monument bearing the sanctuary’s name near Highland Spring Avenue, in front of Hannaford.

Thorncrag is a Lewiston staple, but how many people have actually explored it? Whether you grew up here or are still discovering the area, this is one hike worth putting on your list.

So, have you been? Have you found the fireplace? And have you stopped long enough by the ponds to listen to the frogs?

If not, it might be time. Sometimes the best adventures aren’t hours away. Sometimes they’re right here in Lewiston, waiting for us to notice them.
