It's one of the prettiest views of Maine's largest city.

This incredible view can only be seen by climbing 104 steps up the Portland Observatory on Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine. Don't worry, many reviews say it's not as bad as it sounds. Plus, it's worth a little huffing and puffing to see Portland, Maine, like you've never seen it before.

How old is the Portland Observatory in Maine?

This tower is such a quiet, majestic landmark in all of Maine. According to the Greater Portland Landmarks website, the observatory was built in 1807.  Captain Lemuel Moody ordered the octagonal, 86-foot high tower on Munjoy Hill be built. It was a communication station for Portland’s busy harbor. The captain was paid $5 a year by ship owners who were alerted when their ships were coming in. He could spot them 30 miles away!

The Portland Observatory is the only remaining historic maritime signal station in the United States.

Does it cost money to see that remarkable view of Portland, Maine?

It's only $10.00 for adults, seniors get a 2 dollar discount, kids (6-17) are only $5.00 (under 5 are free), and if you live in Portland, Maine, it's only $5.00. That's an incredible price for not only the amazing view but the history lesson. It stayed as a signal tower until 1923 with the invention of two-way radios. It was donated in bad shape to the City of Portland in 1939. In 1984, Greater Portland Landmarks took over and opened it for tours. But in 1994, an inspection found it had serious moisture problems, and powder-post beetles were eating it away. With the community's help, the Greater Portland Landmarks saved the tower and reopened it to the public in 2000.
