Mainer Loses One World Record, But Holds Onto the Other

Scarborough, Maine's Samantha Ramsdell held the record for the 'World's Biggest Mouth,' and she has been partially dethroned.

Who the hell is Samantha Ramsdell? Sam is an incredibly talented woman from Scarborough, Maine. Sure, she has a huge, uh, gaping mouth (2.56 inches) - but she also sings, is funny, witty, and wicked nice! She can thank COVID-19 for her huge success on TikTok. She moved from Scarborough to try and make it big in NYC! And just about the time she was going for it, Covid hit! So this was Plan B.

Samantha from Scarborough, Maine, held two world records and held onto one.

In 2021, Samantha held two Guinness World Records: biggest mouth gape (2.56 inches) and widest mouth gape (4.07 inches). This record propelled Sam's popularity on TikTok, with nearly 4 million followers. She's having a blast with it, and it's a great way to showcase her funny personality. But she did recently lose one record. She no longer has the biggest gape - just the widest.

This is Marie Pearl Zellmer Robinson from Alaska, and ever since she was a kid, she knew she had a big yawn. As one of seven children, she remembers messing around with her siblings, safely sticking oranges and even lightbulbs in and out of her mouth for their entertainment. The Guinness World Records noted that this Alaskan told the Ketchikan Daily News,

I’ve always kind of known I had a big mouth. I talk a lot, and apparently I do have a physically big mouth, but we never really did anything about it. It was always just kind of a joke that I could fit two, you know, three and a half Jenga blocks in my mouth, type of concept, when you’re kids.

Maria has a mouth gape of 2.86 inches wide!

After seeing Sam's awesome videos, she thought to herself...wait, I can do that. She told the Guinness World Record that she wondered if she could beat Sam's wide mouth,

So I grabbed myself a ruler and I measured. I’m like, ‘wait a second, I can totally beat her!’ Not just by a little bit either – hers was reported at around two and a half inches. It was like, ‘Dude, I can beat her by almost half an inch.'

Congrats to Maria, and good for Sam for hanging onto the widest-mouth record!
