5 Iconic Bridges in Maine You Should Take the Trip Over
Maine is a bit like a time capsule. It's a mix of new and old that makes those of us who choose to live here. With Maine's many rivers and streams, there are over 2,500 bridges that have been built in Maine, ranging from the 19th century to the 21st century.
If you haven't been out to visit or drive across some of Maine's oldest and newest bridges, we've put together a list of 5 iconic bridges you should take a trip over.
Babbs Bridge - Gorham / Windham
Babbs Bridge, between Windham and Gorham, spans the Presumpscot River and is Maine's oldest covered bridge. It was originally built in 1840 but was destroyed by arson in 1973. MaineDOT built a replica of it with every detail of the original. The new bridge was opened in 1976.
In 2024, an overloaded cement truck crashed through the deck, but it was repaired and reopened to traffic in February 2025.
Penobscot Narrows Bridge - Verona Island / Prospect
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory is a marvel of engineering, completed by MaineDOT in December 2006, replacing the Waldo–Hancock Bridge.
It spans 2,120 feet across the Penobscot River between Verona Island and Prospect. It stands 447 feet tall, which is approximately 32 stories. There is an observation deck at the top of the tower where you can see breathtaking views, especially in the fall when the leaves are at their peak color.
Androscoggin Swinging Bridge - Topsham / Brunswick
The Androscoggin Swing Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that connects Brunswick and Topsham over the Androscoggin River. The bridge was built in 1892 for nearby cotton employees living in Topsham.
It gets its name because the bridge is designed to swing side to side when people cross, but it is completely safe.
Perkins Cove Draw Bridge - Ogunquit
Perkins Cove Draw Bridge is a small pedestrian bridge that opens to let boats in Perkins Cove sail through. Just like vehicles have to stop when Maine's Casco Bay Bridge goes up, so do pedestrians have to wait for this tiny little draw bridge to open and close.
Wire Bridge - New Portland
New Portland's Wire Bridge
The bridge is in a rural area of New Portland, crossing the Carabassset River. The bridge is 188 feet long and 12 feet wide, has one lane, and a weight limit of 3 tons. It's a beautiful design that was originally opened to traffic in the mid-1800s.
