Explore the Pitch-Black Tunnels of Maine’s Fort Popham

Fort Popham looks impressive from the outside, but the real adventure starts once you step inside.  

This historic Civil War-era fort is packed with winding stone halls, towering brick archways… and some of the darkest rooms you’ll ever experience, like, ever.

And I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s so dark you can’t even see your own hand in front of your face. Seriously. 

Bring a flashlight!

Some of the old ammunition storage rooms are completely pitch black.

The light from the entrance disappears within a few steps, leaving you surrounded by cool stone walls and total darkness. It’s the kind of experience that makes both kids and adults stop talking for a second because your eyes simply can’t adjust.

 It’s creepy without being too scary, and honestly, that’s what makes it so fun. It feels like you’re exploring a secret underground maze instead of just visiting another historic landmark.  

The best part? Once you’ve finished exploring the fort, you’re only minutes away from Popham Beach, where you can spend the rest of the day by the ocean.

It makes for one of those uniquely Maine adventures where history, mystery, and the coast all come together.  

So if you’re planning a summer day trip, toss a flashlight in the car. You probably won’t need it anywhere else… but at Fort Popham, you’ll be glad you did.
