What are the odds of these two plays happening at a Portland Sea Dogs game?

You'll think you're seeing double, or there's some glitch in the system, but it's just a crazy coincidence. Or is it? On Thursday, April 17, the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox affiliate) played Colorado's Hartford Yard Goats. This glitch in the matrix is super evident once you see the plays side by side.

You're gonna wanna watch those plays again in the Portland Sea Dog game

It's not just that the two plays appear identical; it's that they really were identical. The MLB compared the play. This all happened in the fourth inning with the score tied 3-3. First, the Sea Dogs' Ahbram Liendo threw an 0-1 pitch that went off the glove of Yard Goats third baseman Kyle Karros. The ball ricocheted back and to the left of Karros, into the glove of shortstop Jose Torres, who fired to first base in time to get the out. But wait...

You're seeing double, eh? No, you're seeing Double-A.

Here comes the glitch in the matrix...

With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, the score tied, 3-3, the Yard Goats' Dyan Jorge then also threw an 0-1 pitch that went off the glove of Sea Dogs third baseman Blaze Jordan. The ball ricocheted back and to the left of Jordan, into the glove of shortstop Mikey Romero, who fired to first base in time to get the out.

The two plays were freakishly the same in about every way:

  • both pitches were clocked at 83 mph
  • the pitchers are right-handers with a similar leg kick and delivery
  • the arc of the ball as it flew to the awaiting shortstop was nearly identical.
  • both the batters were 170-pound middle infielders playing second base.

No, the game didn't go back and forth with identical plays all night. Just that one crazy inning. Unfortunately, the Yard Goats got the win 6-3. It pays to pay attention at baseball games.
