A post online stuck out recently to myself and many others by the Auburn Police Department. They are asking residents to take a few extra moments to protect themselves at night.

The Auburn Police Department posted on their Facebook page letting us know they have seen an increase in overnight car burglaries and stolen vehicles.

According to the police, several incidents have been reported in the New Auburn area, specifically around Summer and Winter Streets.

Saying in part,

"Please take a moment each night to lock your vehicle and remove valuables, including wallets, purses, keys, firearms, and other personal items. Nearly every recent incident involved an *unlocked* vehicle." APD via Facebook

It is certainly worrisome to see a post like that, but the officers say there is one important detail in almost every one of these theft cases, that the cars were unlocked.

So, it is manageable and a simple reminder to press your key fob 18 times like I do while I walk away from my car to make sure it’s locked. This can make a huge difference so make sure to lock your car before going into the house for the night, and take any valuables with you.

Try to remember to grab any electronics, your wallet and especially firearms. Even things that seem small or insignificant to you could make your car a target depending on what people want to steal.

A lot of these crimes take place in the middle of the night, when we’re all tucked in. The criminals will walk around and check door handles, if the car is locked they’ll move to the next.

Police are also letting us know that as neighbors we should continue to look out for one another. Now that spring is on it’s way and the weather is getting nicer, more folks will be out at all hours of the night.

Also, many of us have security systems in place and house camera’s, it’s always helpful to take a look at those from time to time in your cloud to make sure everything is quiet on the home front, literally.

Anyone with information on a potential theft is asked contact the Auburn Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and ask for Sergeant David Madore.
