12 Maine Words and Phrases Outsiders Don’t Understand

Anyone coming to Maine who has never visited our wonderful state may be in for a surprise when they meet the locals. Depending on where you are in Maine, our unique words and phrases are likely to make your head spin.

Those who live in Maine but didn't grow up here typically never get the Maine accent. I was born and raised in the state, and when I listen back to tapes (yes cassette tapes) of my first time on-air at Q97.9 in 1996, my accent was much thicker then it should have been.
