Pie. Pie has got to be one of the best culinary inventions ever. Hands down, there's not a lot that can beat a hot cup of coffee and a good piece of pie, in my book.

There's an art to making a good pie. The crust has to be flaky, but not brittle or dry, and the filling has to be made up of just the right density of fruit or cream.

And while there are many around who offer it, not all pies are created equal.

Here are 5 places in Maine that locals say "Order the pie!"

1.) Dysart 's-Hermon

Dysart's does a lot of things right. They've got killer rolls, killer waffles, killer chocolate chip cookies... but their pies...oh, their pies are to die for! Located at 530 Coldbrook Road in Hermon, Dysart's pies are so well known throughout the region that they started selling out of entire pies right around the holidays! You can pop in anytime Sunday through Saturday, 6 AM to 9 PM, and get yourself a slice with a nice cup of joe! Or you can order one online. They'll even sell you a pint of fresh whipped cream to go with it!

2.) Helen's Restaurant- Machias

I first heard about the pie at Helen's Restaurant in Machias when I was in grade school. One of the neighborhood moms always lamented that while she tried her best, she just couldn't get her pies to come out as good as the ones she grew up eating at Helen's. "I wish I knew their secret!" she used to say. Once I was old enough to drive there myself, I had to try a slice to see what all the fuss was about. That lady wasn't lying. Famous around the nation for their Wild Blueberry Pie, Helen's at 111 Main Street in Machias is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 AM to 7:30 PM, and is a "Maine-Must"  in my book!

3.) Sweet Cheeks Bakery- Verona Island

While this bakery is newer to the area than most well-established ones you may have grown up with, Sweet Cheeks Bakery locations have quickly become a go-to for folks all over Eastern Maine. Aside from a ton of other tasty treats, they have a very good selection of pies for sale. $24 for an entire pie is a deal these days, especially when it's super delicious, and the work and toil to perfect it have been done for you! They're located at 70 US Highway 1 in Verona Island, but you can also find slices from time to time in their 24-hour sweet vending machine storefronts in Holden and Ellsworth.

4.) Frank's Bakery-Bangor

Open Monday through Saturday, aside from incredible cakes and their seasonal tarts, Frank's is known far and wide for their pies! They've nailed the perfect crust, and fill them with the perfect proportions. Whether you buy an entire pie to eat or just want a slice, you can't go wrong with Frank's.

This one was high on the list of recommendations. The Mount Desserts Pie Company even has a picture of legendary food aficionado Martha Stewart with one of their delicious-looking pies, right on their website. Located at 2 Lookout Point Road in Bar Harbor, features seasonal pies for sale every day that they're open (which is every day of the week except Wednesday, 10 AM to 5 PM.) Sisters Brit and Hannah Babcock make "fresh and flavorful pies" with recipes that go back several generations.
