This Iconic New England Pizza Chain Has No Locations in Maine
Surprisingly, this pizza and Italian chain, which opened its first location over four decades ago in Somerville, Massachusetts, has zero locations in Maine.
There’s a saying that ‘Maine is just one big small town,’ and if that’s true, then all of New England feels like one big state—tight-knit, familiar, and connected in ways that are hard to explain. That’s why it’s kind of wild that this New England chain never made its way up to Maine.
So, with that in mind: which New England pizza chain, with locations all over the Northeast and as far south as Virginia, doesn’t have a single location in Maine?
According to their website, Bertucci's was founded by Joey Crugnale on November 3rd, 1981, in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Inspired by his grandmother’s home in Italy, Crugnale created a neighborhood pizzeria with an emphasis on its brick oven, which quickly became a local favorite.
As noted on Bertucci's website, the brand expanded rapidly throughout the 1980s and 1990s, gaining national recognition and opening locations along the East Coast and as far west as the Midwest.

Today, Bertucci’s is owned by Earl Enterprises after first filing for bankruptcy in 2018 and again seeking Chapter 11 protection in December 2022.
The second filing was attributed to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, and rising costs, which resulted in several closures throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and beyond.
As of April 4th, 2025, the closest Bertucci’s location to our Pine Tree State is in North Andover, Massachusetts.
The company has 20 locations across the U.S., including in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia; however, none are in Maine.
There you have it — although it's been a staple in New England for over 40 years, Bertucci's has zero locations in Maine.
Have you ever been to a Bertucci’s? Or have you ever even heard of it? We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to join the conversation by messaging us on the app.
