It is named after James Madison, the nation's fourth president, who served from 1809 to 1817.

MadisonMaine.com says the town was incorporated in 1804 as Maine's 150th town.

Van Buren, Maine, in Aroostook County

Van Buren sits in Aroostook County, across the Saint John River from Saint-Leonard, New Brunswick, Canada.

It is named after Martin Van Buren, who served as the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841.

According to VanBurenMaine.com, the town was incorporated in 1881.

Washington, Maine, in Knox County

The town of Washington is located in Knox County.

It is named after George Washington, the country's first president, who served from 1789 to 1797.

Washington.Maine.gov says the town was incorporated in 1811 as Putnam, named after Revolutionary War hero General Israel Putnam. The town's name was officially changed to Washington in 1825.

Not all Maine towns that one might think were named after presidents actually were.

For example, Lincoln was not named after President Abraham Lincoln, as it is actually named after Enoch Lincoln, Maine's sixth governor.

Jackson, in Waldo County, was not named after President Andrew Jackson. Instead, it is named after General Henry Jackson, a prominent figure from the Revolutionary War.

And Harrison was not named after President William Henry Harrison. It actually got its name from Harrison Gray Otis, a wealthy land owner from a prominent Boston family.
