One of the things Maine is known for is its beautiful coastline. It offers stunning views of the water, rocky shoreline, and historic lighthouses.

On the other side of the country, California's coastline also provides incredible views. If you drive along the Golden State's coast, you'll see rugged cliffs and sandy beaches.

Both states offer stunning coastal views, something everyone can agree on. But there is one question that seems to confuse people: Which shoreline is longer?

Does Maine Have More Coastline Than California?

Let's take a look at both states and see why it's actually Maine that has a longer shoreline, even though its general coastline is much shorter than California's.

Maine

According to Maine.gov, the state has "3,500 miles of indescribably beautiful coastline, with bays, coves and similar indentations."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lists Maine's shoreline mileage at 3,478 miles.

According to NOAA, Maine's general coastline is 228 miles.

California

According to the California Coastal Commission, the state's general coastline is 840 miles.

The state's shoreline mileage, according to NOAA, is 3,427.

What Is Shoreline Mileage?

According to NOAA, "Shoreline Mileage of the outer coast includes offshore islands, sounds, bays, rivers, and creeks to the head of tidewater or to a point where tidal waters narrow to a width of 100 feet."

When it comes to the most shoreline miles, Maine ranks fourth in the country.

  1. Alaska - 33,904
  2. Florida - 8,436
  3. Louisiana - 7,721
  4. Maine - 3,478
  5. California - 3,427
