If your idea of a good afternoon involves coffee, browsing books, and coming home with something you absolutely did not need but definitely had to have, Hallowell just gave you another reason to visit.

Smitty’s Book Cellar has moved from Waterville to downtown Hallowell, with a new storefront between Wrapped Up and The Frost Factory. A bookstore tucked between stops for coffee and ice cream? That sounds like an afternoon worth planning.

A Familiar Maine Bookstore Starts a New Chapter

While the Hallowell location is new, the bookstore has a history in Central Maine. Owner Maddie Smith took over Waterville’s Children’s Book Cellar and renamed it Smitty’s Book Cellar, expanding the selection beyond children’s books while keeping options for younger readers.

Now, that next chapter is happening on Water Street, giving readers another local business to explore while spending time downtown.

Add This to Your Next Hallowell Visit

What caught my attention is how easily this location fits into a little downtown outing. Grab a coffee, wander into the bookstore, and give yourself permission to browse without rushing.

You don’t necessarily need a particular title in mind, either. Sometimes finding something you weren’t looking for is the best part of visiting a bookstore.

With cooler weather settling in, picking out your next read feels like a pretty good excuse to get out of the house before heading home to get cozy.

Text your book-loving friend. Your next Hallowell afternoon has a new stop.
