Possible Airplane Part Falls From Sky, Strikes Car in Portland, Maine
I'll be honest, with as much air traffic as we have in the skies over southern Maine, it's a wonder that more people, things and cars aren't struck by wayward debris. Though is seems that an instance of something like this has just happened.
According to a news report from WGME 13, an object, weighing about 35 or so pounds, appears to have fallen from the sky over Portland, Maine before landing on a parked vehicle.
The news station said that late on Monday night, something seemingly bizarre happened in the Casco Bay Lines parking lot which is on Commercial Street in Portland.
Officials say that around 10:10 p.m., a large metal pipe, roughly estimated to be about 35 pounds, came crashing down and smashed into a parked vehicle. It shattered the rear window and even left a dent in the frame. And, if you know anything about vehicle frames, they're pretty dang durable.
Police are investigating, but based on where the pipe landed and the damage it caused, they believe it may have actually fallen… from an airplane. As of right now we're not exactly sure that that is exactly what happened, but it's the only conclusion investigators can come to presently.
In addition to police in Maine, the Federal Aviation Administration has also been notified about the potential plane part plummeting from the sky. It's important to note this is likely a one-off and there's no reason for people to believe this will happen again.
Basically what I'm saying is you don't need to run out and purchase a plane-proof umbrella. Wait, do they actually make plane-proof umbrellas?
