There are certain things that just scream fall in Maine. Foliage, pumpkin picking, crisp air, and those back roads that somehow look even better once October hits.

But taking an old-fashioned train through the Maine foliage to go pick your pumpkin? That takes fall to another level.

This Might Be Peak Fall in Maine

The WW&F Railway Museum in Alna has its Pumpkin Pickin’ Train, and the whole experience feels like something straight out of a Maine fall postcard.

Instead of just driving to a pumpkin patch, you start at Sheepscot Station and hop aboard a historic narrow gauge steam train. The train takes you through the Sheepscot Valley, where you’ll pass through woods and farmland that should be surrounded by fall color this time of year.

And yes, the train is actually taking you somewhere.

Once you reach Top of Mountain, you’ll hop on a wagon that brings you over to SeaLyon Farm, where you can head into the pumpkin patch and pick out one to bring home.

A Different Way to Go Pumpkin Picking

I feel like we all have our usual fall traditions in Maine, but this is one I had never really thought about before.

You’re getting the foliage train ride, the farm and the pumpkin picking all in one trip, and you’re doing it aboard a piece of Maine railroad history.

The Pumpkin Pickin’ Train runs on select dates throughout October in Alna, making this a pretty unique way to experience fall in Maine before the season disappears on us again.
