With the exception of about a year, when a move to Pennsylvania made a provider change neccessary, I have been a customer of US Cellular for more than twenty years.

I have always been satisfied with the coverage provided by the company.  My phone works almost anywhere.  Even in the woods of Maine!  And, in most cases, I have 5G data speeds.

Additionally, the company almost always has great deals on the best phones and the employees of their stores are always super helpful (big shout out to the Houlton store for taking the time to help my elderly mother with her phone issues).

Despite how much I love my cellphone provider, I was kind of surprised that I somehow missed the news that they were being sold.

T-Mobile Acquires USCellular in Multi-Billion Dollar Deal

According to an article on the Capacity Media website, the Federal Communications Commission approved the sale in early July.

The closure of the deal was announced on August 1st.

The price?  About $4.4 billion!

What Does the Sale of USCellular Mean For Customers in Maine?

At this point, it looks like the sale will benefit current USCellular customers in some big ways.

Better Coverage - While USCellular has had great coverage in Maine for decades, the coverage will now get event better.  USCellular customers will now have access to T-Mobile towers and T-Mobile customers will now have access to USCellular towers.  It is a win-win!

New Coverage Plan Options - Very soon, USCellular customers will have access to some of the cool T-Mobile benefits.  Streaming services subscriptions, etc.

The press release from T-Mobile says, in part:

Starting August 7, customers will get a taste of what it’s like to be with the Un-carrier as they get access to customer-favorite dining and travel benefits. To come: every customer will get access to the Un-carrier’s award-winning Care support, more retail locations, expanded digital support and even more savings.

Access to T-Mobile Wireless & Broadband Products - Over the last few years, several of my friends and business associates have made the switch to T-Mobile wireless hubs for their home and business internet.  It will be kind of cool to have similar access without switching providers.
