As a kid who watched a lot of TV growing up, it felt like nearly every sitcom had at least one episode about a time capsule.

Either the main characters were trying to select items to put in a time capsule, they were opening a time capsule, or they were searching for a missing time capsule.

Even though we all saw a lot of TV shows about time capsules, I am pretty sure very few of us have ever actually seen a time capsule in person.

Apparently, there is an actual time capsule hidden in a soon-to-be-demolished Central Maine school and there is a group hoping to find it before the building comes down.

The Search for the Margaret Chase Smith School Time Capsule

According to an article in the KJ, a group of former teachers and local volunteers gathered at the school earlier this week to take one last look for a time capsule that had been sealed in the 1990s.

Time is of the essence because the aging school is set to be demolished in the next few weeks.

A new, $75 million, consolidated school will take the former Margaret Chase Smith School students in the fall.

The group, led by former teachers Maureen Calder, Laura Richter, and Mary Stuart, remember that the time capsule had been placed in one of the school's columns.  At least, that's what they believe.

Unfortunately, the search did not yield any results.

The article goes on to explain that the asbestos remediation and demolition crews have been instructed to be mindful that there may be a time capsule buried within a wall or column of the school.
