If you normally travel across the Kennebec River using Augusta's Memorial Bridge (the big bridge), you may want to find an alternate route on Tuesday.

According to an article on the KJ website, the bridge will be partially closed to traffic on Tuesday.

The Maine Department of Transportation says the westbound side of the bridge will be closed Tuesday from 9 AM until 3 PM so crews carry out a routine inspection.

The bridge, which dates back to 1949 and stretches across the Kennebec River between the east side of the city and downtown near the State House, already had part of this inspection done earlier this month.  This is the follow-up round.

Here’s how traffic will work: drivers coming from Memorial Circle on the west side will still be able to cross the bridge.  If you’re coming from Cony Circle on the east side, you’ll need to use Bridge Street to get across the river instead.  Pedestrians won’t be shut out, either.  You can still walk across using the north side of the bridge.

MDOT says no other roads will be restricted because of the work, but they’re asking everyone to pay attention to detour signs while the inspection is happening.

And, like most outdoor projects in Maine, this plan depends on the weather.  If conditions change, the closure details could shift too.
