Thousands of Maine Residents Without Power Due To Gusty Winds

If you are without power this afternoon, you are not alone.

According to an article on the WMTW website, thousands of Maine residents are without power due to gusty winds whipping through the state on Thursday afternoon.

Gusty winds swept across Maine Thursday afternoon, knocking out power for thousands of customers and making restoration work more difficult.

The article explains that, as of 2 PM, about 8,200 homes across the state were without power.

York County was among the hardest-hit areas, with more than 3,000 outages reported. Kennebec and Sagadahoc counties each had more than 1,000 customers without power, while the area around the Berwicks was particularly hard hit.

The strong winds are also creating challenges for utility crews.  Bucket trucks cannot safely operate when wind gusts exceed 30 mph, potentially slowing efforts to reach damaged lines and restore service.

Fortunately, we have some of the best utility crews in the country here in Maine and they are doing their best to get power restored as quickly as possible.

Just how strong are the winds?  The article explains that westerly winds were gusting between 30 and 40 mph across parts of Maine Thursday afternoon.

Augusta recorded a 43-mph wind gust shortly after 2 PM.

Despite the strong winds, temperatures remained in the 70s and 80s Thursday afternoon. Much cooler conditions are expected overnight, with temperatures dropping into the 40s and low 50s.
